In 1997, Dr. Steven Schallhorn received the prestigious Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Award for Excellence in Military Medicine. The award was given to Dr. Schallhorn by General John Shalikashvili, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at that time, during a ceremony at the Pentagon. Dr. Schallhorn’s work with PRK was what got the attention of the highest ranks of the military, and he was awarded with a $50,000 research grant through the Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher Armed Forces Foundation, as well as a plaque for his efforts. During the time Dr. Schallhorn received the award he was working in the Naval Medical Center Ophthalmology Department in San Diego. Since then, Dr. Schallhorn’s work has made large contributions to the improvement of procedures designed to help patients correct their vision.
